Enys Gardens of Cornwall
The Gardens at Enys offer a unique tranquil and unspoilt experience. I came across this private estate and its gardens last spring and was blown away by its beauty and carpets of bluebells. The gardens have been neglected through the generations of the owners but the family now are trying to bring it back to its glory days. Though I must say I rather love the lostness about this once great estate.
Within the 30 acre gardens lie the open meadow known as Parc Lye, where the spring show of bluebells is breath taking; the ponds, where the waterwheel can be found; the flower garden, which is gradually being restored to its former glory; a New Zealand garden, which reflects J.D. Enys’s plant hunting interests, and many woodland areas, which show different types of planting including many remarkable trees.
Enys itself (the house) is open to the public during the weekends of the Art Exhibition and the craft fair. A lot of work has been done to enable this and involved removing many rotten timbers. The model farm buildings and stable block are used to house the history room which has information about Enys, the gardens and the Enys family. This are is being extensively reorganised and is a work in progress.
As with any garden Enys is a work in progress and this year you are likely to see many changes due in part to the need to clear Rhododendron ponticum. We have gained a large area through clearance of ponticum around the chilean laurel and this will be gradually replanted. We lost our iconic Monkey puzzle tree to honey fungus last year and have suffered some storm damage together with all Cornish gardens. Our paths have come off the worst for wear and we have had to put down gravel to enable access.
