Making our way steadily around the Cornish coast line on foot 

The historic fishing centre of St Ives is a popular destination for visitors to the west coast of Cornwall, with its narrow streets, busy harbour, golden beaches and unique and equally famous light.  

Like Van Goch stumbling through France and finding Provence, St Ives has been attracting artists, drawn to this coast since the nineteenth century for its mild climate and stunning landscape. 

We set off across Porthmeor beach.  There were plenty of surfers, dogs, kids playing and the odd nutter stripping off and galloping into the sea.  The wind was blowing and the sun shone as we crossed the beach heading to the coastal path taking us towards Carrick Du. The water was clear and breaking gently onto the rocks.  

The coast paths can be quite muddy this time of year so good walking shoes are advised. Mike bought me a great pair for my last birthday, the best light weight boots ever (Inov8 Rock light GTX water proof).

Turning the corner from the bay the view is breath taking as you see the sheer cliff face to the rugged sketchy landscape and the dark aqua blue depths of the Atlantic hitting the eye with the power and magic of Mother Nature.  We spotted a dolphin about half a mile out, feeding on a shoal of something delicious.

This coast line is very undulating which meant watching our feet then stopping to enjoy the scenery.  Well worth it.

We came across some fellow walkers eating the best looking home made sandwiches ever and I wished (again) that I’d packed some instead of just satsumas and a bag of wine gums!  Will definitely make sandwiches next time.   

After Clodgy point we realised we must have lost our way as we weren’t on the circular route we were planning.  However, we were having a great day out so not worried about the extra few miles through fields and over hedges to find the right path again.  We did smile at the eventual and welcome sight of St Ives Bay and Godrevy Lighthouse though and started to look forward to getting back home to a roast rib of beef and home made apple crumble and custard. 

From Lower Barns Boutique B&B www.lowerbarns.co.uk it will takes about 40 minutes by car.  This walk is well worth it but maybe follow the directions better so you don’t get lost.  Great for a day out walking then into St Ives for a little bit of retail therapy, a visit to the Tate or my favourite, the Barbra Hepworth Museum.  Try out Porthminster Beach Café which is really worthy of a visit.
